His father, Robert Fitzgerald Williams (September 10, 1906 – October 18, 1987) was a senior executive at Lincoln-Mercury Motorship in charge of the Midwest area. He is of English, Welsh and Irish descent on his father's side, and of French descent on his mother's side.

Career History: His film debut was "Popeye" in 1980. William was Oscar-nominated for "Good Morning, Vietnam" (1987), "Dead Poets Society" (1989) and "The Fisher King" (1991). While he finally own the Oscar Award as Best Supporting Actor for "Good Will Hunting" (1997).
